Heart stopping moments!

There’s a partiular sinking feeling when you realise that you’re out of vodka. Fortunately I found the remnants of a bottle of 50% Smirnoff Blue colonising the dark recesses of my drinks cabinet and, having subjugated it, am now drinking one of the strongest White Russians I’ve ever had.

Yeah baby!

In other news, did anyone see the National Television Awards? Did you catch our fearless misLeader Tony stepping forward to present Trev MacD with a lifetime achievement prize? Did you hear the hecklers shouting “Stop the war!”?

A day in the life

Five thirty at last -
No more work for a few days.
Gozo, here I come!

In a rush again
But slow people block my way.
Do not dawdle here!

I stand impatient
on an overcrowded train.
Where is the driver?

Silverlink motto:
Always late, never on time.
Must run for the bus.

No time for dinner,
Going to get my back waxed.
Can you feel the pain?

Buffy’s on! Woohoo!
Final season has started.
Hope wife records it!

The close of the day -
I think that’s enough Haiku.
Now where’s my passport?

Horror show

Well folks, as promised here’s my trick-or-treat-tastic suggestions for a screamalicious night in this Friday. In no particular order, my top ten films to round off any scary night in:

The Exorcist
A cinematic masterpiece. Treats the subject of demonic possession and seriously and intelligently and still freaks me out even now.

The Omen
Dated but still modern enough to be genuinely scary. Contains some truly memorably scenes and will leave you not wanting to take any photographs of yourself.

Jaws
Great White Sharks have never been given such bad press as in Spielberg’s classic. Who can say they’ve never been scared by this film and who doesn’t know John William’s masterful minimalist soundtrack by heart?

The Thing
Very few films achieve the sense of isolation and paranoia that John Carpenter’s 1981 remake instils in its audience. A small group of scientists, trapped in an Antarctic research station with only each other and a voracious shape-changing alien for company.

An American Werewolf In London
John Landis’ lycanthropic classic combines horror with a very funny script. From the opening moments in the Slaughtered Lamb pub (watch out for a young Rik Mayall!) to the conversation in the porn theatre, every scene is memorable. Rick Baker set the benchmark with the werewolf transformation effects that have still yet to be matched.

The Changeling
An underrated, little known gem that’s recently been released on DVD. A bereaved composer buys a large house but discovers he’s not the only inhabitant. Very creepy and unnerving, with a superb performance by George C. Scott. The major influence for

The Others
A contemporary chiller set in WW2 Jersey starring Nicole Kidman in an oscar nominated turn as the protective mother of two young children. The arrival of three new servants starts a chain of ghostly events that lead to a startling conclusion.

Evil Dead 2
A long time before Spider-man, Sam Raimi started his cinema career with The Evil Dead and then remade it with more money as the Evil Dead 2 which also put Bruce Campbell on the map. Very gory but also very funny and still scary. Works because it keeps its tongue firmly nailed to the cellar trap door in its cheek.

Near Dark
Modern day vampire film, which is probably my favourite of that genre. A beautifully shot contemporary tale that adds so much to the vampire mythos without once mentioning the V word or showing a pair of fangs. Slightly let down by the dénouement but otherwise a classic.

????
I’m not actually going to give you a 10th film because there are so many left to choose from. Instead I’m going to let you suggest what should be added to this list. Are we going to see “Nightmare on Elm Street” here or an old classic like “Rosemary’s Baby” or “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”. Was anyone actually scared by “Blair Witch Project” or do you prefer Cronenberg’s opuses? Let me know below and then get your friends to tell me too and let’s find out what scares bloggers!

Goth City

Auntie Beeb is also having a themed week in the lead up to Hallowe’en - Goth Week.

Radio 1 are doing a documentary on Goths while BBC 6 (?) are playing music from various live events by The Cult, Siouxsie and the Banshees, All About Eve, Dawn of the Replicants, Sisters of Mercy (natch!), Transvision Vamp (excuse me?), Bahaus and others. No sign of Skinny Puppy, The Swans/Children of God, Fields of the Nephilim though.

The BBC H2G2 article on Goths kills the time too.

Shriek Week

Owing to the fact that it’s Hallowe’en on Friday, Channel Four are having a “Shriek Week” and are showing some great films. As I’m away for most of the week, here are my recommendations for you.

The Wicker Man C4, Today, 01:05
Christopher Lee is marvellous in this creepy film about the inhabitants of the remote Scottish island of Summerisle. A young Edward Woodward is the uptight Christian policeman sent to the island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl and is shocked and outraged when he encounters the strange customs and habits of the locals. Absolutely fantastic.

Ringu C4 Thursday, 00:20
The Japanese adaptation of the novel by Koji Suzuki about a video tape that causes all the people who watch it to die seven days later. Remade recently into The Ring with Naomi Watts.

The Hitcher C4, Friday, 00:45
Classic cat and mouse thriller with Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell. This film pulls no punches and is genuinely creepy. May have dated a bit but still can be quite shocking.

The Exorcist C4, Saturday, 22:00
Unavailable on video for over a decade after it’s release, this is still an intensely scary film. Unfortunately most people who have been raised on a diet of Freddy Kreuger, Michael Myers and the Evil Dead find the effects a let down but this still stands as one of the best horror films ever. Also the only horror film to ever win an Oscar for Best Screenplay. (to the best of my knowledge!)

Peeping Tom C4, Saturday, 00:20
Bizarre psychological thriller about a serial killer who films the dying expressions of the women he murders. The film was so controversial on its release in 1960 that the director more or less never worked again. Powerful and shocking. (Trivia fans: Clock DVA took samples from this film for their track “The Act”)

If you want something that’s not scary, then I can recommend the following action film:

Point Blank BBC1, Tuesday, 23:45
This is the original 1967 version of the film that was remade as Payback with Mel Gibson a couple of years ago. A deliciously brutal film about one man’s quest for revenge. Starkly directed by John Boorman with Lee Marvin in the lead role showing what a pussycat Gibson really was.

No, I haven’t seen your spoon!

Further to Lyle’s geek out a few weeks ago, I emailed the London IMAX to confirm when Matrix:Revolutions would be released. It doesn’t look like it’s going to be on 5th November, that’s for sure. Apparently Warner Bros haven’t given them a date yet.

No dates given for the Manchester IMAX either but the Bradford IMAX has it listed as starting on Friday, Nov 28th (at 15:30)

So the question is, do I bother going to see it in a normal theatre or do I wait to have my disappointment served in an XXXXL IMAX portion?
