I'm presuming that a .Net route is unwelcome? I use Community Server, which is great if you can use C# or VB.net to edit the source.

You can test all sorts of cms softwares here and I've been hearing good things about Vanilla forum software (standards compliant etc.).

Alternatives?

Read a book. Drink a glass of fine wine. Go for a long walk. Enjoy a sunset. Stay up for the sunrise.

*gets coat*

(and yes, just hiding the fact that I've heard of these things but have NO IDEA and can't offer anything constructive to this thread... but I know how you hate it when no-one comments so I'm compensating, badly).

The only one I have experience with is Drupal. It's a strange beast and I'm not sure if I recommend it; not very intuitive but fairly powerful. Not as good to mod as other things I've tried.
phpBB integration is possible but I wouldn't really trust it, although its own forum is so bad that it might be worth it.

Only yesterday I was considering starting a guild website in it though. I think our crazy new outfit on TVC could do with breaking out of its current home.

SubDreamer looks good - shame it needs to be purchased. Something to consider for possible future use however.

Sorry, forgot the link to SubDreamer.

(And yes, I do have a set of the files you can borrow/use, if you want - just drop me a line...)

Also, look at Subdreamer - which does have integration with not just phpBB but vBulletin and a bundle of others.

It's a bit numptified, but it's fairly good all round.

Mambo does integrate with phpBB too, but it's a deeply hacked version, and Mambo still sucks the farts out of dead cats.

Cheers guys.

Depends what it's for

Um... it's for managing content.*

PHPNuke is looking most favourable because it seems to integrate with phpBB quite well. I'll investigate the hacking issue.

*Seriously, I'm not sure yet. I'm messing around with some stuff for a WoW "guild" website and also would like to add some knowledge to my sadly depleted skillbank. What it's not for is blogging.

Avoid Mambo (now Joomla for the up-to-date version) like the plague. It's the most user hostile piece of crap I've ever come across.

PHPNuke can apparently be hacked, and has a lot of information about being hacked, but I only knew about that sort of thing early last year, so things could've changed.

Drupal's OK - well, depending on what you want, of course - but it's OK in general.
