The Motorcycle Perils
Aquaasho asked what I meant when I earlier twittered about having had 3 close shaves with death this morning. (It’s nice that someone cares!) For once, they weren’t my down to my incompetence on the bike. They were, in order of happening:
- A bus, intending to go straight across the mini-roundabout I was turning right on, screeched to a halt when it realised that, curiously, I had actually used my indicator correctly and was actually turning right.
- Another bus heading towards me on a narrow road was slightly straddling the centre line so I maneuvered into a position closer to the left hand kerb. A car pulled out from a drive way and proceeded to unnecessarily stick it’s nose onto the road, forcing me to swerve back into the path of the oncoming bus.
- A tosser in a Black BMW tried to see how fast he could go around a corner and discovered that the forces that are generated by going too fast around the corner pushed him into the other lane. The lane that I was in approaching the corner from the other side. More screeching of (his) brakes.
Quick quiz: when you’re coming to a give way junction (be it from a drive, a T-junction, whatever) which way do you look first?

To be honest, I’m not sure I have a decent routine for arriving at give way lines.
Pretty sure you’re supposed to look right first, though, so that you see the more immediate traffic first.

If you’re in a country that drives on the left, you look right at a T-junction/crossroads, etc. If you’re in a country that drives on the right, you look left.
I have been boning up on this as in a few weeks I will be doing several thousand miles of driving on the “wrong” side of the road.
