Marathon Training (Week 1/14)
Home again, home again, jiggety jig!
I’ve been on holiday. Nowhere exciting, just the west coast of Wales visiting the rellies and going to the beach. It’s relaxing in a “get up at 6am to take care of the hatchling” kind of way. Avoided email and internet and all in all it was bliss. The downside is that in my first week of training I ate too much, drank too much and only managed 2 out of 4 training sessions. Or 3 out of 5 if you include today. To be fair, it’s not too bad although I counteracted everything by the sheer amount of cheese, wine and beer that was consumed.
I am generally feeling bloated and overweight. I’m sure this will go away after a few days of healthy, proper eating and booze abstention. I just didn’t see the point of starting a diet when I was going to be staying at a restaurant.
Actual training this week ended up something like this:
- Wednesday: 5 miles, ~49 mins
- Friday: 5 miles, ~44 mins
- Sunday: 9 miles, ~88 mins
I’m trying not to look at the times too much as they were meant to be “easy” 5 milers and a “steady” 9 miles. I can’t help it though. 5 miles is only 8km and is a distance I should be able to do very comfortably in about 40 minutes or so (my fastest 10km race time is about 45 mins). However, these times are in keeping with the 14 week training plan I’ve got which is for a 3.5 to 4 hour marathon time so I’m not going to complain just yet.

i never worry about times when I run, as long as you’re feeling good (or just ok?) that’s all that matters isn’t it?

Yeah, it is. It’s a habit more than anything and it just irritates me that I can’t seem to get it out of my head whenever I run.

I know what you mean - it’s hard not to look at the time, but at this stage of the training, it’s more about distance, isn’t it? How about leaving your watch/GPS at home ;o)

Hi anx! Believe it or not, I don’t wear a watch day to day anyway (mainly because I’m too lazy to get the straps on them fixed!) and don’t wear one while running either. I have to stop myself looking at the clock before and afterwards I think. But then again, it is useful - if I know I’ve run, say, 6 miles in an hour then I can work out my average speed (duh) and the calories I’ve burnt and the rest of it.
Ah well, I have a 5 mile race in a week anyway so that’ll give me a valid excuse to check the time!
