I cared too much - way too much. And am now drowning in the bile that the finale has generated. Am I too forgiving? For sure. Would I change that? Unlikely. Was I expecting better? Hell no.

It was what it was: flawed but consistent with the insane inconsistencies of RTDs magic ex machina finales. Madness. But compelling madness.

PS general consense seems to be that with everything else he put in the kitchen sink RTD forgot all about the Shadow Proclamation gang. Typical!

I think it would still have been a bit surprising. If we'd seen the Daleks coming and got into that "Will the Daleks get them?" thinking, being that close to the end of the episode you'd expect them all to get caught and about to be exterminated and that's the cliffhanger (like with the Cybermen episode in season 2). At worst, you might think "Oh no, one of the companions is going to get it - will it be Rose or Donna?" but if it then panned out as it did, I think it would have been just as surprising and even more of an "Oh. My. God!" moment because it came from so far out of left field. It would have played to your expectations and then subverted it entirely giving you a totally different cliffhanger from the one you might expect.

At the end of the day, I just hated that whole running towards each other bit. All they needed was the Bolero and it would have been complete. This is also drawing me further into Dr. Who. nerd territory than I wanted to go because I don't actually care that much.

Foreshadowing the event may have taken away from the suprise of it. And you have to admit- it was pretty suprising.

Being shot by a Dalek is one thing and it's not that I had issue with, it's the where and how he got shot which I find to be at fault. Running down the road to meet his long lost love and oh no, you just know a Dalek is going to turn up to spoil the party. If he's going to get shot by Daleks then it needs to be more little more of a worthy scene - even if it was showing the Dalek(s) earlier so that the viewer is asking themselves the question "Are the Daleks going to get them?" More of a build up, more of a payoff and, for once, no, the Doctor doesn't get away. As it stands, it's just a bad Deus Ex Machina - or Dalek Ex Machina if you prefer.

Hmm. The only theory I can come up with is when they said that the Doctor was coming, Davros said something like: "It's all going exactly as I planned!" which means he needs the Doctor for some reason. Maybe the muon energy (or whatever) that streams out of the Doctor when he regenerates will be captured by Davros and used for nefarious means, thus circumventing the regeneration?

Anyway, if it is for real and he does regenerate, I think it was a perfectly fine way for him to die. I always wondered why the Daleks didn't just shoot him dead, rather than sit around chatting with him.
