Paging Dr. Horrible

This has been way under my radar but it looks mighty purdy and somewhat entertaining.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog is an online musical extravaganza developed by Joss Whedon and his brothers Larry, Curly and Mo (or Jed, Ned and Ted)¹ and starring fascist poster boy, Neil Patrick Harris, Han Solo wannabe (and long time non-blogger), Nathan Fillion and the ever lovely Felicia Day (who had her own success with The Guild, an award winning online comedy series that is well worth watching - especially if you’ve ever dabbled in the world of MMOs.)

No idea when it’s going to be released and only a vague idea of what it’s about - a supervillain (played by Harris), his hero nemesis (played by Fillion) and his probable love interest (played by Day). There will be songs and laughter and love and romance so let’s watch the freshly released trailer and dance:

Let’s put a smile on that face!

First proper trailer for next years Batman film, “The Dark Knight”, is now online.

You can watch it here.

Quite frankly, it’s fucking fantastic. Heath Ledger’s Joker is, so far, as far removed from Jack Nicholson’s interpretation as Bale’s version of Batman is from Micheal Keaton. So far, if there’s one blockbuster I absolutely must go and see next summer, it’s this.

Trailer Trash

It’s been a while since we’ve had any decent trailers and I’m not about to spoil things now. Instead you get a preview of a fucked up, highly gory Japanese film called Machine Girl. It’s after the jump as you may not want to watch if you aren’t into over-the-top, shlocky gorefests.

Conspiracies in Real Time

or Here’s the new Cloverfield Trailer in glorious HD if you can get it (or pretty glorious non-HD if you’re anything like me).

Cloverfield is the apparently real title of the Project-formerly-known-as 01-18-08 (which I formerly blogged about here) You know - weird teaser trailer about monster invading manhattan and ripping head of statue of liberty? Yeah, that’s the one.

Comments: the picture is amazingly crisp suggesting that while a lot of the action is meant to be shot on mini-dv or whatever, they haven’t actually compromised the quality (compare to the footage shot with a Canon-XL1 mini-dv from the 28 Days Later trailer). That being said, how fucking annoying is the cinema-verité shaky-cam, especially when the troops are shooting? I’m still not convinced about the idea of filming the “end of the world” while trying to escape from it. The scene that sticks out is when the presumed protagonist, Rob, goes back to either help his friend or retrieve the camera from his friends dead body (about 3/4 of the way through the trailer). Unless they’re journalists, in which case why are they using a handy cam, risking your life for a camera is just fucken stoopid, no matter how much “people are gonna wanna know how it all went down”.

I hope that I’m proved wrong, I really do.

Vamped out

Haven’t heard much about the forthcoming graphic novel adaptation called “30 Days Of Night” - never even heard of the source material before. So if you asked me if I wanted to see it, I would have said no. However, I’ve now seen a picture that has piqued my curiosity and might be tempted to give myself a little post Hallowe’en treat.

Scary Mary

I’ve never seen Mary Poppins.

I’d probably be more inclined to watch it if this was a representative trailer for the film:

Film Tuesday

Lots of film stuff today as I’ve got loads of reviews to write up and not all that much work to do (at the moment - even I can’t make adding HTML cellpadding to a table last more than a couple of hours!). Lucky you!

The next installment of Indiana Jones has finally got a name : Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I’ve been vaguely aware of the mythos behind the crystal skulls (some info can be found here) but don’t know too much. My guess is that the Kingdom in question is likely to be Atlantis although that might disappoint many fans of the old Lucasarts point-and-click adventure games who consider Atlantis to have been already explored in the marvellous “Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis“. Still, not complaining - it’s an Indiana Jones film and hopefully it will be watchable and entertaining.

On the other hand, I am probably more excited about the prospect of the forthcoming game, LEGO Indiana Jones. If it’s anything like the LEGO Star Wars games, it will be an essential purchase.

This weekend also saw the release of the trailer for Jon Favreau’s comic adaptation of Iron Man. I’ve never been a big fan of the property but the trailer does look good. Robert Downey Jr. seems highly charismatic in the role of Tony Stark and the effects are stunning. There are some great moments in the trailer and I could actually end up looking forward to this quite a lot. I like Jon Favreau’s writing too (as you’re about to find out) so there’s a lot going for this film. The trailer can be seen at the Apple site here.

Apart from all that, the only other film I have on my immediate radar is David Schwimmer’s directorial debut, Run Fatboy Run starring Simon Pegg. I don’t know how good it’s going to be but it’s a funny film starring Simon Pegg about running a marathon. There’s bound to be a couple of laughs in it.

Requiem soon?

A couple of weeks ago, I persuaded Mrs D. to watch the entire first series of 24 with me as she’d never seen it before. Now, as I am wont to, I ended up on IMDB finding out more about some of the actors and so on and also where some of the regulars like Carlos Bernard (Soul Patch Tony) have ended up. While perusing the entry for Reiko Aylesworth (who played Michell Dessler) I noticed that she is appearing in a movie slated for release this year (or next year in the UK - January 18th, fact fans).

A movie called Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem.

After Nightwatch…

…comes the Daywatch (Dnevnoy dozor)

Trailer is here. Won’t make any converts of anyone who didn’t enjoy the first film but damn me, it looks like more of the same only with added KA-CHOW! Unfortunately, it’s not released in the UK until the beginning of October.

Wonder if there’s any significance in using a mix of Rob Zombie’s “Living Dead Girl” as the soundtrack other than it’s kewl?

Trailer Park

Some old, some new.

First up there’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (.MOV, 9.6Mb). This definitely looks like it’s going to be darker than any of it’s predecessors and rightly so. It’s being directed by David Yates who has done nothing that I’ve seen or heard of before (with the exception of a few episodes of The Bill and The Girl in the Cafe, a one off BBC drama with Bill Nighy and Kelly McDonald). No doubt I’ll be going to see this at some stage.
